We're back! The Port's Mouth is on a mission to discover, rediscover, and explore even more restaurants along the Seacoast. We will be passing along to you our favorite dishes, the most refreshing drinks, and the best dining locations.
And what better way to begin again than by putting our taste buds to the test at the Blue Mermaid?! Located at 409 The Hill in downtown Portsmouth, this tempting restaurant lured us in with it's warm, caribbean inspired colors, beachy ambiance and diverse menu.
To start out, we tested a few fresh and fruity cocktails...
We then tried an appetizer that not only was delicious but also had a beautifully delicate presentation.
The Grilled Scallops were the perfect way to start out our tasting; served on The Blue Mermaid's house-made yucca chips, the roasted scallops are served with corn salsa and an avocado vinaigrette. Delicious!
Next, we tried the Parmesan Panko Fried Chicken, an instant classic. Tenderized boneless breast of chicken encrusted with panko and parmesan, made even better with andouille cream sauce. Sides include sautéed green beans and garlic green onion mashed potatoes. The ultimate comfort food.
Following was the Pumpkin Honey Braised Lamb Shank. The melt in your mouth slow braised lamb enticed with a pumpkin honey glaze will soothe your soul. Served with fried plantains and rice ‘n beans.
The Santa Fe Spiced Skirt Steak was my favorite; mainly because of all the contrasting, vibrant colors from the various diced vegetables. The Skirt Steak is dusted with santa fe spice then grilled. Finished with watermelon jicama salsa, sweet potato hash and garlic green beans. A house favorite. (And we can see why!)
Sesame Fried Tofu was next on the menu, with crispy sesame encrusted tofu over sautéed tomato coconut curry, onions and red & green peppers, served with rice ‘n beans, this blast of flavor is a dish you will definitely want to try.
And of course, we had to satisfy our sweet tooth, ending with this perfectly balanced creamy and tangy cheesecake.
Our experience at The Blue Mermaid was thoroughly enjoyable, from it's warm atmosphere that made us feel like we were vacationing away from the cold winter approaching, to their delicious menu and tasty cocktails. We left in a satisfied food coma and will definitely be returning, maybe next summer to check out their outdoor deck!
