Although we love downtown Portsmouth, there are many great locations that aren't found in the heart of town. Even the Port's Mouth HQ, the Port Inn, is found on US 1 Bypass. And just 10 minutes down the road is another organization that many locals know and love. Introducing Demeters Steakhouse, a restaurant known for producing high quality meals, providing excellent customer service, and creating an exemplary atmosphere. To help us make a proper introduction, we asked Demeters' General Manager, Zack Gage, to teach us what there is to know about the Steakhouse.
Thanks for taking the time to meet with us, Zack. What makes Demeters so unique?
Demeters Steakhouse is located within Regeneration Park, which is an eco-friendly commercial property that is committed to sustainability. Demeters Steakhouse offers hand selected cuts from the Mid West while utilizing local produce and the great local fish markets. We offer lighter fare options on our grill menu, or a more elegant dining experience at one of our dining room tables. We are family friendly and do offer a childrens menu. At the center of our restaurant is our concrete laid bar where you can enjoy a burger and catch a Bruins game. Demeters offers 45 wines by the glass, which are all offered in different size pours to allow for tasting or a few sips to accompany a given course. Meals range from 14-18 on our grill menu and 25-45 composed entrees and a la carte steaks.
To start things off, we tried the Demeters Wedge Salad. Whats in this, Zack?
The Demeters wedge is served with our house made bleu cheese dressing, candied pecans, apples, and bacon lardons.
Next was the very tasty Beef Tournedos.
This comes with foie gras, green beans and a sherry mushroom demi glace.
Certain vineyards have a long history of excellence in making American wines. These wines are offered in all of the great American Steakhouses and Demeters has chosen to honor these vineyards as their “LEGACY WINES.”
To compliment our meal we were able to try the Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignons are created using grapes from our own vineyards, as well as grapes grown by a small group of carefully selected independent growers with whom we have long-term relationships. Since the early 1970s, we have aged our wines exclusively in American oak barrels. Associate Winemaker Christiane Schleussner pioneered the use of the “dry soak” method with a team of researchers from Cork Supply USA, and this method has given Silver Oak one of the lowest cork taint rates on large-format bottles in the wine industry: 0.53% cork taint versus the 4% industry standard.
What menu item do we have to finish on, Zack?
The steak was a 20 oz KC Strip steak, which is a bone-in New York Strip.
During dinner we were also able to try a few cocktails. Which drinks were served and what's in them?
The Nor'Easter: sailor jerry spiced rum, malibu coconut rum, pineapple juice, cranberry juice. The Lafayette (our flagship cocktail) : hendricks gin, infused cucumber vodka, st. germain, grapefruit juice, agave nectar. The Red Carpet Treatment: rooibos chai infused vodka, chambord, cranberry juice, amarena cherry syrup, canton ginger liquor foam.
Being an independent and locally owned business is important because it allows us to stay connected with the community. We are inspired by the seasons and the local farms when it comes to menu planning. We also are able to join up with programs like Share our Strength to fight childhood hunger. Having grown up in the seacoast, I personally am excited to be part of the greater Portsmouth community.
