Caitlyn Hassett, Event Coordinator, welcomed us as we visited the well known Portsmouth Gas Light Company. We were happy to be back at 64 Market Street again, as surely everyone is, when making their way to this local favorite. We had the chance to ask a few questions, take some photographs, and have a few menu classics.
It's good to see you again Caitlyn, thanks for having us. We don't know everything there is to know about the Gas Light. Please fill in the gaps for us.
The Portsmouth Gas Light Co building has stood the test of time for the past 170 years even surviving Portsmouth's "great fires" of 1813. Our restaurant was established in 1989 and is adorned with rich textures of wood, brick, and copper, paying homage to the Gas Light Co's role in Portsmouth's storied history. In fact, every week we burn more than a cord of aromatic wood in our brick oven and wood fire grill.
The Gas Light Grill, located on our first floor, is a venue which has something for everyone in your group. We offer a variety of casual dining items, such as homemade clam chowder, wood-fire grilled burgers, and beer battered haddock alongside delicious entree items including lobster stuffed haddock and wood fired steaks. Also, our new wood fired rotisserie serves a different slow cooked dish fresh off the rotisserie every day! Meal prices range from $10-$30
Our wine and beer list also reflect our commitment to catering to our customer’s varied needs. Our beer selection boasts sixteen draft lines and over thirty bottled beers originating in breweries from California to Maine. Our wine list has an offering of 28 wines and will intrigue the wine novice as well as satiate the connoisseur. If cocktails are more your speed you won’t be disappointed either. Our Monster Mary never disappoints, served in a Grey Goose bottle and made from scratch and with 5 rums and fruit juice, our Prozac Punch will certainly put a smile on your face.
We got comfortable in our booth on the first floor. Our appetizer was the Mussels and Frites. What makes this dish so delectable?
Mussels and Frites: Fresh Prince Edward Island mussels sauteed with garlic, shallots, roasted red peppers then simmered in a white wine chili sauce. We then top them off with a pile of matchstick fried potatoes and a drizzle of chipotle aioli.
Next was the Farmer's Market Burger. This was no average burger. This was your two-hands-needed, big-bite-required, packed-with-flavor, kind of burger. What is in this meaty masterpiece?
We start with our famous wood fire grilled burgers and add lettuce, onion, tomato relish a fried egg, bacon, 2 beer battered onion rings and goat cheese.
Last but not least was the Petit Filet. What is this dish, Caitlyn?
It is made up of a 6oz filet cooked to your preference, served with a deep fried potato pancake and a creamy romano cheese sauce.
As always, we loved the food and the room was filled with laughter, clinking of glasses, and other signs of a good time. Please touch on being an independent business in Portsmouth, NH.
Being an independent, locally owned restaurant allows us to be an active part of our community. We show our commitment by hosting charity events like Ice Fest, which benefits Strawbery Banke, The Seacoast Rep and Pro Portsmouth, to participating in community events like Chowder Fest and Polar Grill Fest. The Gas Light strives to contribute to making Portsmouth a place that locals and tourists love to be. We believe that the more local businesses work together, the greater we will become as a community. For this reason we are committed to buying locally, choosing to use purveyors such as Golden Harvest and Favorite Foods as well as locally owned and operated contractors.
An independent restaurant also has the opportunity to shape their own culture. We have the freedom to be flexible and accommodating with our employees creating a real community. We also are able to show our appreciation to our amazing customer base. Programs like our Happy Hour, Frequent Diner, and our famous 50% off Monday coupons are designed to give a little back to our valued customers.
