Overlooking the water on 99 Bow St. in downtown Portsmouth, New Hampshire, exists a restaurant known not only for it's prime location, but for it's fantastic menu selection and an abundance of refreshing beverages. Introducing the Martingale Wharf. This is where we had the pleasure of trying some menu items, asking a few questions, and photographing the spectacular scenery. We didn't accomplish this all on our own, of course. We had the help of Meg Barnes, Assistant General Manager.
Hello Meg, please share with us what makes the Martingale Wharf so great.
An upscale, welcoming atmosphere with gorgeous water views. In warmer months sit out on the deck for a backdrop that can't be beat. The Martingale Wharf is a Casual American Bistro enjoy an array of food items from lighter fare to amazing Steaks & Seafood. The menu appeals to all pallets, working with locally sourced cuisine and a 90% gluten free menu.
To start things off we had the Smoked Mushroom Salad. What's in this tasty salad?
N.H. Mushroom Co. Smoked Mushroom Salad with Mesculin Greens, Goat Cheese basil dressing, and fried chickpeas.
Lucky for us, we sampled another starter as we awaited our main dishes. What is this appetizer, Meg?
The Country Fries. They are butter glazed fries tossed with aged cheddar and local country ham.
For our entrees we had a mix of land and sea. The first was the Atlantic Salmon. What does this come with?
The Pan Roasted Atlantic Salmon comes with wild rice pilaf, fried baby kale, and arugula pistou.
Last but not definitely not least, was the Steak. Please tell us what makes this entree taste so amazing.
20 Day Dry Aged N.Y. Strip Steak with smoked russet steak fries, spinach and mushrooms topped with Baley Hazen Blue Cheese.

One of the ways the Martingale Wharf operates is to start locally. We work with many companies to make sure our food is local and fresh. Here is the list: Hopewell Farms, Sanders Fish Market, Meadow's Mirth Farm, Robie Farms, Apple Hill Farm, Hickory Nut Farm, Stick & Stones Farm, Dancing Lions Chocolates, Touching Earth, Portsmouth Lobster Company, Kellie Brook Farm, Archer Angus, N.H. Mushroom Company, Kathy's Wild, Heart Song Farm, Jessica's Brick Oven. Also, throughout this past winter the first for us we hosted Give Back Nights every Wednesday hosting a different local non-profit organization giving 10% of the food sales from the evening to the local non-profit. We try to support the close knit community that supports us.
Whether you're sitting on their deck looking out into the Pisqatiqua River, having a meal inside their modern interior, or socializing with a drink in your hand at their unique bar, going to the Martingale Wharf is always a great experience.
