Introducing the Rosa Restaurant! Set directly beside the picturesque Prescott Park and in front of the colonial atmosphere of Strawbery Banke, this family-style Italian restaurant, opened its doors on December 22, 1927. This is where we had the pleasure of trying some menu items, asking a few questions, and photographing some delicious food. We didn't accomplish this all on our own, of course. We had the help of Michael McLean, General Manager.
It's great to be here just shortly after the grand re-opening! Please tell us a little bit about Rosa.
Our Restaurant is Casual affordable family Italian. Prices for entrees range from $10 up to $25.
What is this first dish, Michael?
Breaded Veal cutlet, pan seared and served over spaghetti with a salad of arugula, capers, red onions, tomatoes and a lemon sauce.
Next we tried the Shrimp and Mussel Scampi.
Pan seared shrimp and mussels served over spaghetti with tomatoes, white wine and scampi butter-the butter had shallots, garlic, herbs and lemon.
What's this next dish?
The Spaghetti and Meatballs. The meat balls are a mix of ground pork, veal, and beef, Parmesan cheese, herbs and gluten free bread crumbs. The recipe is Mike's mom's recipe. It is served with rosa red sauce and shaved Parmesan cheese.
And finally the last dish was a pizza.
The White Clam Pizza is a house made pizza dough with white sauce, steamed little neck clams and whole roasted clams on top.
The food was excellent! Please tell us what it means to you to be an independent locally owned business.
Being independently locally owned is very important to us. Both owners and myself all live here locally, and we understand what the people that live here in our community look for when they dine out. Downtown Portsmouth was missing a place where locals can go out to eat with their whole family and find something on the menu that appeals to everyone at an affordable price.
We had a great time at the Rosa and we definitely will be back soon. Check out the slideshow below for some bonus photos, including some drinks, desserts and the Mediterranean Salad and the Flash Fried Calamari. Thanks for reading!
