After a few emails were exchanged, we were excited to meet with John Dunn, General Manager of the Surf Restaurant. We had the privilege of asking him some questions about the new restaurant on Bow Street, taste some fresh seafood, and shoot the event with our camera.

It was nice meeting you John, thanks for having us. We've heard a lot of positive things about Surf. Please enlighten us.

Thank you for stopping in to Surf. Our location on Portsmouth Harbor certainly gives you a feel for this port town of ours. There is always something going on in the harbor, the ebb and flow of the tide brings change every day. The one thing that will not change is the quality of our seafood at Surf. Our chef/owner Michael Buckley is uncompromising on the quality of product we serve. Our proximity to the seafood markets ensures fresh product, but allowing the seafood to be the star of the plate is distinctly Surf. Our raw bar features crisp oysters from the Northeast waters, smoked seafood, calamari salad, scallop ceviche, sashimi tuna and shrimp cocktail to get your night started. Adjacent to Surf is our new Surf Sushi Bar offering chef inspired sushi and classic cocktails.

Can you tell us a bit about the Owner?

The chef/owner Michael Buckley, has been a restauranteur since 1995. That's when he opened MT's Local, previously known as Michael Timothy’s Urban Bistro, on Main Street in Nashua, NH. Before that, he was a very distinguished Chef who cooked in some of the best restaurants in New Hampshire. He has also spent time in Europe working under a master chef. In 2002 he opened a Surf Restaurant in Nashua and in 2011 he opened this location in Portsmouth.

Upon entering Surf, we could tell it was a seafood restaurant. The interior was full of engaging ocean-themed decorations, from paintings of crashing waves to a photo of the renowned Moran Tugboats by local photographer, Phil Cohen.

To start us off, we ordered the Raw Sampler for two. They have larger Samplers for groups of 4 and up, feeding as many as 12 people. There were so many different types of raw seafood we could hardly keep track. What makes up the Raw Sampler, John?

The Sampler consists of a selection of each of the choices on our raw bar, featuring oysters and clams on the half shell, smoked trout and salmon, sashimi tuna, scallop ceviche, and marinated calamari.

The Raw Sampler was excellent and we could have left right then and there and would have been completely satisfied. But it was time for the main meal! What makes up this dish?

The Sesame-Seared Tuna is a Yellowfin tuna served over wasabi mashed potatoes with tempura carrots, maple-soy drizzle and scallion oil.

The food was incredible! We appreciate all your help in making this happen, John!

With a great view, modern atmosphere, and exquisite food selection, Surf is a perfect option for some fine dining. Nothing says "Portsmouth" like indulging in some seafood while overlooking the Piscataqua River. How can you get better than that? As a restaurant reviewer summarized in an article that came out when the Portsmouth location opened:

Surf has a terrific view, mod decor, and a bustling vibe. The lively crowd here adds to the vibrant vibe and the tasty dishes delight. Surf features creative, thoughtful dishes made with fresh, well-prepared seafood.

They serve Lunch at the Surf Restaurant Thursday through Sunday from 11:00am to 4:00pm. Dinner starts at 4:00pm everyday of the week. The Surf Sushi Bar is open Tuesday through Friday starting at 5:00pm and starting at 4:00pm on Saturday and Sunday.

They are located at 99 Bow Street Portsmouth, NH. Take a peek at their website. Like them on Facebook to get updates and be in the know with any Surf-related news.

Below are some more photos of our trip to Surf, including what we deemed "The Best Fish and Chips" we've ever tried and a delicious bowl of clam chowder. Don't forget to comment and share. Thanks for reading!
